Whose Moral Values Are They Anyway?

Sunday, March 23rd, 2008

First there was the sight of Janet Jackson’s pastie-adorned breast at the Superbowl, then Nicollet Sheridan’s towel-dropping scene on Monday Night Football. A public outcry followed, deploring the obsessively sexual orientation of advertising, entertainment, and the media as a whole.

As the debates rage, a core question must arise: if sex is known to sell anything, who is doing the buying?

Public Relations and marketing gurus give the public what they crave. If they don’t, they are out of a job. How many new viewers will Desperate Housewives gain because of the uproar over their ad? Thousands? A million or two? And who enjoyed the gratuitous nudity? Those who “missed it” on Monday Night Football were able to indulge their curiosity as the tape was replayed and replayed ad nauseum. Who in America has not seen it by now? Surely only the sightless and the occasional hermit could have missed it.

So what does that say about the current state of U.S. morality? We are not all depraved, immoral, addicted to pornography, nor necessarily in favor of public sexual displays. We are simply curious people who are still in a reaction phase to a long history of sexual repression. After the strait jacket of the puritan period and the social constraints of the following 300 years, the pendulum is swinging as it always has. It makes a wide arc until slowly returning to the center.

Those who openly seek to legislate morality would do well to recall the disastrous social experiment of prohibition, imposed by a righteous and vocal minority, and its permanent legacy of crime, murder, and corruption.

Cover Letters To Uncover The You, Not Hide It

Friday, March 21st, 2008

Any great resume that has won an interview call, would have most certainly been accompanied by a great cover letter. For, resumes only do half the job, with the cover letters doing the rest to draw the employers attention amidst a huge, somewhat uninviting, pile of resumes at the desk. While resumes are the backbone of your profile, cover letters are those that give it a shape and form. It complements the resume further in bringing out the actual you before the readers, who are usually the HR personnel.

An HR department receives tons of such applications everyday and it’s indisputably a boring task to go through all of them and call the right candidates. So, to get yourself noticed, your application should scream out in style. Both the resume and the cover letter must be impressive enough to avoid ending up in the waste bin.

Many websites offer guidance on writing resumes and cover letters. There are also sample letters and CVs available online to make your job easier. Some websites even offer to write it for you, given all the basic details. But hang on! Think before you download a resume and cover letter template and send it across to an employer. Is a free template written by an unseen person enough to talk about you? Is the template enough to get your resume picked? Does a template have all that you, as an individual, would like to tell your employer? Ask yourself these questions before you rely completely on a template. Remember, cover letters are supposed to reveal you more, not hide your personality and character.

Think for a moment. You are different from a thousand others. You have different background, different academic records, different character traits, different skill sets, different potential, and much more. So how can a mere template accommodate all these differences in one generic pattern? You can of course look up a resume cover letter to get an idea, but just following it blindly isn’t a winning thought. Your resume and cover letter must be unique in their own right, having the unique information presented in the best possible way.

So as you start looking for a job, put in 80% of your time and energy in creating an effective resume and cover letter that perfectly define you. Put in your words and add the personal touch that often stands out from the run-of-the-mill templates hugely in circulation. The cover letter is meant to uncover you, not overshadow you. The best advice to job-applicants is: Take the help of resume cover letters, but make it sound like you speaking for yourself. That’s the key to great resumes and cover letters!

Satellite Phone Rental

Friday, March 21st, 2008

Satellite phone service providers offer many different rental plans and phone plans to get into the game. When you are in the market for a satellite phone you need to choose a phone and a plan that will meet your specific needs. For example for short term use or to try before you buy you might consider only a satellite phone rental rather than buying a phone and getting a plan.

Of course if you are looking for a long term commitment then you should consider all the different plans that are on the market. When you get into the cellular market you choose a phone and plan that’s right for your particular needs. Satellite phones are no different. Although there may not be as many satellite phone styles as with cellular there are still plenty.

Choose the carrier that you want to deal with. If you have no preference then you might think about finding a phone you like and then choose your carrier accordingly. So first you will choose a satellite phone that you like which might be a handheld or an in car style. You then choose a plan that will meet your needs. You might choose a monthly plan, a prepaid plan, or even a hibernation plan. Different plans are offered by different companies. The plan is the most important part your purchase so choose wisely.

So to summarize here’s the order that you should consider doing things.

  • Choose a satellite phone that you like.
  • Choose a service provider.
  • Choose a plan.

If you are on a budget you might also consider buying a used phone. Some phones might require buying the services through them but not always. Often you can buy a phone and hook up with any company you want. It certainly pays to shop around and there are definitely much better prices online than there are in many of the local dealers so make sure that this option is always available to you.

This might be a newer industry but it still is very competitive and if you want a satellite phone rental online is definitely worth considering and that it is what you want for coverage. Although satellites are fairly straight forward when it comes to coverage make sure you understand how it works so that you get the right plan for the job.

There are all kinds of packages, programs, and rentals offered including prepaid calling cards, free emails and/or text messaging, various plans that include different minutes and features, and let’s not forget about those novel packages that are too good to be true.

If you are going to be a heavy user you will want to choose a plan that fits your type of communication but if you are only going to use the phone every now and then you might want prepaid so you don’t have those on going monthly fees. There are even special plans for emergency usage only. These plans are designed for a specific style of usage that is of the utmost importance.

Whether you choose a satellite phone rental or a complete satellite phone plan package is up to your personal needs.

Exposing Your Expertise

Friday, March 21st, 2008

Writing and leveraging articles is my most successful strategy for promoting my Website and my speaking and consulting services. Visitors to your site from targeted articles tend to be higher quality leads than those from search engines, and potential buyers like to see that you’re published in many credible outlets.

Here are my recommendations to implement this strategy:

1. Write the article

This may sound self-evident, but a couple of pointers:

a) Keep it short, and make the language simple, especially if you’re targeting online outlets. People don’t read word for word on the Web - rather, they’ll scan the screen. Complex sentences and dense copy will lose readers fast.

b) Develop a template that can be easily customized for different target markets. My “Top Seven Ways to Tune Up your Website” has been parlayed into versions for over a dozen different industries. The essential points remain the same, and customizing simply involves adding specific examples.

2. Put it on your Website

One of the key goals of your Website should be to showcase your expertise. Content (combined with testimonials and success stories) is the best way to achieve this.

When adding articles to your site:

a) Include a clear reprint policy. This should state whether you allow articles to be reprinted, and if so, under what terms (including your byline, copyright, notification of use, etc.)

b) If you have a large number of articles, provide an index page that divides them into appropriate subject groupings, and gives a two-line description of each.

c) Create a byline with an enticing hook to get people to visit your Website. Mine refers to my popular free tipsheet “Beyond the Search Engines”, which lists 23 alternative ways to promote your site. This is far more powerful than a bland statement such as “Philippa Gamse is an internationally recognized . . .”

3. Research and offer it to appropriate venues

It’s critical to be very clear about your target audience, and how to reach them. Who are the economic buyers and decision makers that you’d like to be in front of, and what do they read? Do those sites or publications accept outside articles, and if so, what are their policies around doing so?

My assistant, Bonnie Jo Davis, runs my highly successful articles placement strategy. She provides a complete primer of her methodology, along with many online research sources at http://www.ArticlesThatSell.com/

4. Follow up links and references

It’s extremely important to measure the success of these efforts, both in terms of the traffic to your site, and its quality.

Check the “referring URL” section in your traffic reports, and follow links to you from any site that you don’t recognize. Often, site owners won’t inform you when they’ve used your material. So you want to ensure that you have been properly attributed. But also, thank the site owner. I recently sent a note to
a university professor who had added some of my articles to his course reading list. His response? “I really like your ideas, and by the way, we’re looking for a speaker for our upcoming conference . . .”

The Proof of the Pudding . . .

Does all this work? Absolutely. One of my articles was recently highlighted as the “Cool Site of the Week” in Tekguide.net - an online technology and computer directory. But the page that it linked to was not mine, but PowerHomeBiz.com -another site that had featured this article. So I now have sites quoting sites that quote me . . . and that gets major brownie points in Google - the only remaining credible free search engine.

I was also recently hired to consult for a site in the auto industry after the owner had read my article in eDealershipnews.com. He said “I liked the article, I can see how you think, and I’d like some of that thinking for me”. No further selling required!

The Congressional Honeymoon Appears to be Over

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

Remember when Nancy Pelosi took office as Speaker of the House? You would have thought she was taking the helm of Spiffy Maids rather than the hallowed halls of Congress. Her statements indicated she would clean up the mess in Washington, restore ethics and order beneath the Capitol dome, and still have time to pose for countless photo-ops with her grandchildren.

Well, here we are, six months into Congress’ new term, and Americans are as upset as ever with the folks down in Washington. A new Gallup survey indicates that confidence in Congress is actually at an all-time low. That’s right—despite the lofty claims of the Pelosi regime, the average American is not that impressed with the goings-on in the nation’s capital.

A paltry 14 percent of Americans claim a great deal or quite a lot of confidence in Congress. Now, keep in mind that Gallup began taking the Congressional confidence rating way back in 1973. The rating, however, has not been this low since the early 1990s.

Let’s put it this way—according to Gallup, Americans are more likely to express confidence in HMOs than in Congress. In other words, as much as Americans may complain about health insurance, they’re complaining about Congress more.

In contrast, interestingly enough, Americans are expressing great confidence in the U.S. military. Despite the drumbeat of negative news coverage about the war against terror, a whopping 69 percent of Americans have a great deal or quite a lot of confidence in the military. In fact, of all the institutions cited in the Gallup survey, the military commanded the most respect.

Democrats promised a new era in leadership in Congress at the beginning of the year. But it’s obvious that they’ve done little to excite the American public. Granted, Gallup pollsters say that the general mood in the country appears to be quite negative now—but still, you would think that Congress could generate more support.

Could it be that Americans are frustrated with Congress’ feeble attempts to tackle our immigration crisis? Gallup reports that worries about immigration are on the rise, indicating that many Americans recognize the dangers that unchecked illegal immigration pose for our national security and our economy. Also, despite some favorable reports from Wall Street, Americans remain troubled about the economy. Could it be that runaway Congressional spending and excessive tax burdens are having an impact on American consumers?

When the President’s approval rating sinks, the American news media display all the signs of obsession, repeating the statistic over and over again. Yet, when public opinion of Congress takes a downturn, we barely hear one word from the big three network news anchors.

It’s time for media pundits to recognize the fact that, as far as politics is concerned, Pennsylvania Avenue should be a two-way street. It’s high time that the Speaker of the House is held accountable for Congress’ actions—or inactions. Speaker Pelosi should be held to the same standard as the man who occupies the White House. And I’d hazard a guess that, if Gallup polled Americans on that point, the vast majority would agree.

Saving money on your mortgage

Wednesday, March 19th, 2008

Shopping around for mortgages is so popular these days that many people can be excused for thinking that switching lenders is the only way to save money on your home loan. But there is a much easier way that does not require phone calls, computers connected to the internet, or trips to your bank or building society.

Did you know, for instance, that making overpayments on your mortgage can slash thousands of pounds off your interest bill? Additionally, it will cut the length of time taken to repay your home loan so you get to own your home sooner.

Imagine, say, that you have a £100,000 repayment mortgage, with a 25-year term and an interest rate of 6%. Your monthly payments will be £644, and after 25 years you will have paid back a total of £193,290. In other words you will have paid back £1.93 for every pound borrowed.

If, however, you were to overpay your mortgage by just £50 each month, your total payment would be reduced to £177,279 — a saving of over sixteen grand in interest. Furthermore, this overpayment shortens the length of the mortgage by 45 months, which means almost four extra years of bliss.

Its is worth being prudent though and ensuring that your will not be penalised by your lender for changing your standing order or making overpayment. In the main, most flexible mortgage lenders will allow you to make overpayments of up to 10% each year. But if your lender doesn’t allow this, you have another trick up your sleeve!

Lessening the term of your mortgage from 25 years to 21 years would increase your payments in exactly the same way as overpaying by £50 each month. Mind you, this is a much harsher way to do it because payments are fixed. However, it doesn’t prevent you from increasing your term again, should you need to, by simply writing to your provider.

At the end of the day, paying off your mortgage early is simply the best and least risky ways of saving money. By making overpayments to your mortgage of around 6%, your money would be working harder than if you had invested it into a savings account with 7% earnings.5% for a basic-rate taxpayer. For a higher-rate taxpayer, this risk-free and tax-free rate is equivalent to 10%, which is practically unbeatable!

Many people forget that even though we sign up for a 25-year mortgage term there is no earthly reason why we have to stick to this. If you have any extra cash each month, using it against your mortgage can make a huge difference and it can save you thousands of pounds in interest each year.

Good luck on removing that mortgage millstone from around your neck!

How To Structure Your Autoresponder For Maximize Success

Wednesday, March 19th, 2008

In this article I would like to share with you some tips that have helped me to experience success online. I wish I had done this when I started first online as I would have been earning a lot more money now.

Your autoresponder and your website are the two most important ingredients for succeeding online. You need to have a professional host that will ensure that your website is up 24 hours. You also need to have a professional autoresponder like Getresponse or Aweber. You can have this software on your own website, but then you need to worry about backing your list up everyday. I know of one internet marketer who lost his list of 18,000 prospects due to his server crashing.

Now what is very important is that you have a welcome email with a free report of value to send to your prospect. This is very important as it will build credibility and help to establish rapport with your prospect.

Next you will have a sequence of emails that will help to form a strong relationship with your prospect. This could be an informative 5 day email course. Make sure that it is something of value. You need to give before you start to receive.

After this you can send promotional emails with a hard sell. Some interesting things that I have discovered with email marketing is that you get the best response on a Tuesday or a Wednesday. You usually get the highest click through rates on a Monday or a Saturday, but you will get a lot less emails opened.

Just ensure that you vary your email offers to make sure that your prospects are always kept on their toes. Send promotional emails, newsletters, free gifts and feedback mails to improve the responsiveness of your list.

Would you like to know more about the magical marketing techniques that have helped me to quit my day job? I have just completed my new ebook.

A Woman’s Final Farewell To Past Hurts

Tuesday, March 18th, 2008

Today I say farewell to self-criticism of my being. I choose today to see myself as a beam of light designed to shine wholeness and happiness to others who I meet.

Today I say farewell to self-sabotaging behaviors. No longer will I remind myself of my past mistakes and failures. No longer will I beat myself up for making choices that did not benefit me. Instead, today I choose to honor learn from my failures and embrace my successes as I am a woman designed with dignity.

Today I say farewell to poor self-esteem. No longer will I compare myself to other people as I realize that there is no one in this world that can be like me. I have not found a person who is able to talk, walk, love, and touch with such passion and inspiration like me. I am often imitated but am never duplicated as there is only one me. Thus today I accept that I am beautiful and am proud of who I am.

Today I say farewell to being a woman scorned, as I cannot rewrite the past. No longer will I sit in a room filled with despair, depression, hopelessness, and unhappiness. I will no longer allow my thoughts of past hurts to impact my health, wellness, career, and wealth. I trade these tight fitting shoes from the past for shoes that I am able to strut myself in without fear of corns or bunions. I will walk with my head held up high, as I am a real woman with creative thoughts, visions, and great pride.

Today I say hello to being a woman who loves life. I am filled with energy no matter what obstacles I may face. I was designed to have success in every area of my life and I happily take hold of the reins.

Today I say hello to being a woman who does not have to settle for less. I no longer have to compromise my happiness just to be like everyone else. Instead I strive to fly with the eagles and embark on my life’s journey with grace and tenacity. I am a strong woman. I am a real woman.

Today I choose to love myself for who I am and not what other people want me to be. Why you might ask? I have discovered the strength that lies within me. Through times of hurt, I will strive for healing. When faced with fears, I will find faith and peace. When I am feeling alone I will rest assured there is someone with me. I have finally discovered that I have found a friend and that friend lives deep inside me.

So this is my final farewell to ALL my past hurts as I choose to no longer allow you to reside within me.

Florida Drug Rehabs Gain Recognition For Individualized Treatment

Tuesday, March 18th, 2008

Florida Drug Rehabs have long searched for the most effective way to treat drug addiction. Some of them have used the 12 step approach, some a medical approach and other drug rehabs a scientific approach, all of them reporting a high rate of relapse among their patients. No matter how hard the addiction treatment community worked, patients continued to relapse.

Individualized Florida Drug Rehab Program

One aspect of rehab that one physician recognized was that patients admitted to rehab were all admitted to the same drug rehabilitation program, regardless of their needs or background. This meant the patient had to fit into the drug rehab program rather than the drug rehab program changing to meet their specific needs. The end result was that if the patient couldn’t wasn’t a perfect fit for the drug treatment program relapse was almost certain. Finally some Florida drug rehabs designed drug addiction treatment programs that were able to design their programs around their patient s needs.

Drug Addiction Treatment Comes of Age

The drug rehabs of which we speak have taken drug treatment to another level. They have developed treatment components within their drug rehabilitation programs which specialize in certain areas of treatment. One such area is dual diagnosis treatment and the other is treatment for the gay and lesbian population. While the drug treatment centers still provide state of the art treatment for drug addiction and alcoholism, they have developed highly specialized areas of treatment for these patient populations. This allows the Florida drug rehab to bend to the patient’s needs instead of the other way around.

Jonathan Huttner is one of the founders of a national addiction treatment helpline 1-800-511-9225, which can help you locate effective treatment anywhere in the United States. Florida drug rehabs must provide highly individualized addiction treatment to be effective. By developing specific treatment components for dual diagnosis treatment and addiction treatment for the LGBT community these programs set a wonderful example for the other rehabs in Florida.
