The 10 Essential Questions to Answer in Creating Your Web Design Brief

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

A website is an essential part of any company marketing tool set. If you want to look credible and established in this day and age, a website is a must have, rather than simply a nice bolt on. But if you’ve never had to design a website before, how can you ensure your web project gets going on the right footing? After all, there’s a confusing array of options and you can easily get this wrong, wasting lots of time and money.

Before you get going on your web design project, here are the 10 essential questions you should ask yourself in order to write a good brief. Hiring a web design company is the same as hiring any professional designer, the better the brief you create, the more likely you are to get a finished product you are happy with.

1. What specific objectives do you have for your site? Do you want to sell products, generate sales leads, or simply create an online presence for your business and brand?

It is essential that you know exactly what you want to achieve with your site. The difference in functionality, design and cost between a brochure site and an e-commerce site can be enormous. Think carefully about what your objectives are and how you will measure whether your website meets these goals. Your design agency will need your brief to be clear on this. Tip: think long term. Will your objectives change in the future? If so you might want to build some flexibility into your site.

2. Do your objectives for the website link to your overall business and marketing plan? i.e. will a website support your business goals?

Any marketing programme needs to be linked to your business goals in order to be worthwhile. This may seem like an obvious point, but it’s surprising how many people jump into building a website, without understanding the wider context or opportunities available to the business.

If you haven’t written a business plan or marketing plan yet, then I strongly recommend doing this first. Putting your ideas on paper and spelling out how everything will work (from banking, to premises, marketing, insurance and more) will help you to decide how important your website is to your broader business activity. It will also help you to create a realistic budget for your project.

Tip: Try to keep your business objectives SMART - Specific, Measurable, Actionable, Realistic and Time bound.

3. Have you reviewed the websites you like and dislike and listed the reasons why?

The best place to look for inspiration in web design is obviously the internet. There are millions upon millions of sites online, with many more being added each and every day. If you take the time to look closely you will easily be able to pick out the styles and functionality you like and importantly, what you don’t like. These ideas should form part of the brief you deliver to your design agency.

Which sites should you look at?

The first step is to look at your main competitors and to critique their sites. Next, look at the broader industry / profession in which you operate and finally inspirational websites. Far example, if you’re an architects practice, look at other architects first, then consider design or construction company sites, before a general trawl of the internet.

Tip: Try to keep in mind that you’re only looking for ideas and not a template to copy.

4. Do you know what content you want to include on your site?

You need to think about both the text and images you want on your website. Not only what you want to include, but how you will create it. For example, do you have photos and images already, or will you need to take some new photos, or write some text. Will you need a professional copy writer to help put this together, or edit your writing?

Also have a think about whether you want to change and update your content regularly, or if it will remain fairly static? If you want to be flexible then you’ll need a content management system (CMS) running at the back end of your site. These range in price from cheap to vastly expensive, depending on the degree of complexity involved with your site. There are also some open source (i.e. free) CMS programmes, but your designer will need to set them up to work on your site.

Tip: Think carefully here as the content and the way it is managed will have a dramatic impact on the cost of building and maintaining your website.

5. How will you manage the site once it has been launched?

Building your site is only the first step in successful website marketing. Once launched, you’ll need to maintain it to get the most value for your outlay. You should think about content updates, hosting, domain name registration, security updates, managing interactions with browsers (blogs, contact forms, forums) and more.

Do you have the skills and time internally to manage this, or will your web design agency be responsible? IF so what ongoing charges will be incurred? If you are going to manage this in-house, do you need to train up a member of staff? If so what costs are associated with this? Can your design agency train your staff, or will they provide a maintenance pack / instruction manual to help? Tip: Choose your web design company carefully if you need ongoing support. If you choose a cheap, small agency, they may not have the capacity to provide ongoing support.

6. How do you want to interact with your browsers / readers?

There are various options for interacting with your readers, from simple email contact forms, to blogs and forums. Each comes with its own pros and cons. For example, a blog is interactive and great for gaining traction in the search engines; however it needs to be updated regularly with relevant content if you are to look professional. A simple contact form is the easiest and lowest maintenance option.

Tip: think about the experience your browsers are looking for. If it’s technical support then potentially a forum is the most appropriate. However if it is a simple question, then an email form is much easier to manage.

7. How will you attract visitors to your site?

There are lots of options for attracting visitors. Think about search engine optimisation (SEO) and ask any design agency you approach what their expertise is in this regard. Other options include paid for search / pay per click campaigns, e-book give-aways, interactive content such as blogs and forums, and crucially offline promotions i.e. where can you promote your domain name, for example on your business cards or in press releases. Tip: there are literally hundreds of books, videos, courses and programmes you can buy to learn more about generating traffic for your website, but your agency’s experience will also be extremely valuable.

8. What are the wants and needs of your target audience?

Your website will not be much use if you haven’t considered the needs and wants of your target audience. For example, do they typically have a broadband connection or dial-up? Which browsers do they use, Internet Explorer, Safari, FireFox or others? Will some access your site via a mobile phone, iphone or a PDA? How technologically advanced are they? Are they happy to enter their credit card details online, or should you need to use a more trusted e-commerce solution, such as PayPal? Are you promoting a useful resource, likely to attract repeat visitors? Tip: As with any marketing communications programme, this will be most effective of you consider your customers wants and needs early on in the web design process.

9. What security and accessibility standards do you need to consider?

There are various security considerations to bear in mind when you develop a site. In addition there are laws that mean you have to make your site accessible to people with disabilities. For example in the UK, the Disability Discrimination Act requires websites to be useable for people with bad eye sight. There are ways to overcome this, for example a web browser with sight difficulties may use a text reader which literally reads out the content of a website. Therefore you need to ensure any images are appropriately labelled. Tip: talk to your web design agency about accessibility and security. It’s likely you will not need the same level of detail here as say a government department, so don’t over do it or be sold too much.

10. And finally, what budget do you have for this project?

If you have lots of money, then you can be more flexible in choosing your design agency. Often the most impressive results are achieved when hiring a specialised web design company. For those of you with a more limited budget, consider an off the shelf package from companies such as Mr Site

Of course, you can also go the self build route, using Microsoft FrontPage, or by taking a web design course. Alternatively you could use one of the popular blogging packages such as WordPress

Tip: you can build a great site with a limited budget, but it will take you a lot more time. Ask yourself whether you have more time or more money when making your decision. You should also consider the importance of securing a good domain name, something which is increasingly difficult to achieve.

Revealed! The Difference Between a High Quality Vitamin and a Dud

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

A vitamin is just a vitamin, isn’t it? With so many nutritional supplements out there, many people believe that all vitamin and health supplement products are the same. Well, they are not.

Many people just buy the cheapest vitamins or supplements available, or the one from the television ad that got their attention. Let me be clear about this, don’t believe a lot of what you hear and read in advertisements.

All advertisements are designed by professional ad designers who specialize in creating sayings and images that stick into your subconscious mind, whether you like it or not. They even do studies to prove what ads are the most effective and brainwash you the most.

For every ad you see, there were dozens of other versions that were rejected. You only see, hear, or read the ad that works the best to brainwash you.

They know that if their ad hits the right triggers in your brain over and over again, you will eventually buy their product. Each company spends tons of money on luring more customers to stores instead of spending it to improve upon their products or test their quality. Great products spread the word on their own through word of mouth advertising.

Each company has advertising teams and divisions within the company that do nothing but focus on how to get you, the consumer, tricked into buying their products. Your decision to buy has little to do with any research you did on your part because you just believed everything they told you.

Ask other people, try things, make your own decisions, you will find that a lot of people have been ripping you off and feeding you a lot of B.S. Great products create a buzz and happy repeat customers on their own through word of mouth advertising.

Back to the vitamins! Let’s use vitamin C (ascorbic acid) as an example. Most people would think that vitamin C could only be vitamin C, so that is why they think that all brands are the same. What they don’t know is where the orange came from and how the vitamin C was extracted.

Can we agree that mother nature knows the best and most exact formula for providing vitamin C on the molecular level? I am not going to give you a science class here, but I need to prove a valid point.

Some natural health companies are selling products that are derived from nature, and nature alone. Other companies, unfortunately, do not use mother nature as their source and they end up with vitamin bricks. They look like a vitamin, taste like a vitamin, but they are molecularly different.

Other companies follow almost all of the rules except the oranges that they get the vitamin C from are not organic, and are grown with fertilizers, hormones, and pesticides. This dramatically reduces the nutrient contend within the orange, thus depleting the amount of vitamin C within the orange.

Some companies get half way there by using nature as the source, but then they isolate the vitamin from the natural ingredients it lives with in nature. Vitamin C, for example, is never found alone in nature. This breaks the bond of synergy within the orange.

This creates an imbalance with the laws of nature. The laws of nature, on a molecular level, is all your body is aware of. The only way your body knows how to build its health is by following its molecular laws. When they are broken, or your body is given something with a different molecular make up than it is supposed to have, your body does not know what to do with it.

Think of Van Gogh, or your favorite artist. Most people can recognize their work, but the original artwork is absolutely flawless and worth millions of dollars in some cases. Many prints are made every year, some duplicates are even made with texture to look just like the real thing.

But are they the real thing? To the untrained eye people would not be able to tell the difference, but you as a fan of their work, and anybody trained in studying artwork to determine its worth sure can tell.

Which copy of the artwork is worth more? The fake one or the real thing? Which would you rather have hanging in your house? Which would you tell your friends about? Would you brag about owning a fake?

Mother nature is no different, it is beautiful, flawless and is best left untouched and unduplicated. People will continue to try to duplicate nature, but I am afraid they will fail, time after time.

So do your research next time you are going to buy vitamins, or any nutritional supplement for that matter. Make sure that the company can tell you where the vitamins and ingredients came from so you can be sure that they are potent and pure. Also don’t ever buy vitamins or supplements unless they have a money-back guarantee. That way you can try them and send them back if they don’t work.

Cheap Secured Loan - How Cheap Can I Go?

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

When you hear the word “cheap” what does it conjure up for you? Can it be the pair of shoes that you are wearing or the new house that you purchased not long ago? So no matter what the product is having something of a better quality but at a cheaper rate, how often would you not jump at the chance to possess something like that. If you are that type of person, then may be it is time for you to look at getting a “cheap secured loan”. These kinds of loans have been specifically set up to fulfill a persons financial requirements. Often such loans will help a customer to obtain a cheaper and more accessible rate than any other loans that are currently available.

However, a secured loan is a loan where the borrower must place collateral against the amount of the loan that they have taken out. The collateral they use can either be a house, car or any other related asset and works as security on behalf of the borrower. A cheaper secured loan is a secured loan which is provided to the borrower at a lower rate of interest than normally provided by the lender and certainly this type of interest rate is always an added benefit to any borrower. Often these type of loans the lending company or bank will offer the borrower a longer repayment period, which is often an additional benefit to those borrowers who choose to opt for these types of loans.

Often a cheap secured loan can be used for a variety of purposes such as the borrower wants to purchase a new car, or take a vacation or it may be that they want to make some improvements to their home. Some people even use such loans for consolidate debts that they already have into one easy to manage account.

Often such secured loans come at a lower rate of interest than normal loans because they are secured against the borrowers property and will often have the added benefit of a flexible repayment period. With such loans one can often borrower a larger sum of money and the loans offered can range from £5,000 to £100,000. However, the amount being offered really depends on the security being offered by the borrower. As mentioned previously such loans will provide the provider with an extended repayment period and because of this the borrower often gets a cheaper interest rate and can pay the loan back over a longer and more easily manageable period of time. Often the period time in which the loan has to be paid back generally ranges from between 5 to 25 years.

You can easily obtain a cheap secured loan from the many different banks, lending societies and financial institutes that are around. But the best method of obtaining a cheap secured loan is by going online. Using this method the borrower has access to a large number of loans that are available from trusted lenders. This method allows a borrower to look at and read the terms and conditions of the lenders loan facilities and thus make a qualified assessment of all the facilities that are available to them.

Vehicle Alignment By Size For Increased Highway Traffic Flows

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

In the future of net-centric cars all automobiles will communicate with each other and it makes sense when on freeways going long distances that these computer systems should allow for all the cars of various sizes to flow together based on their size and weight. It will also be safer in case of an accident or software glitch or tire blow out?

If you have a whole bunch of little cars they’re very light weight so they get good gas mileage driving at 70 mph bumper-to-bumper with big trucks and something goes wrong these poor people will be crushed into oblivion. How would such a system be designed to protect the occupants?

I believe that the software would be standardized and each car would be given a number that would be based on its size, number of occupants, speed capability, most efficient speed and weight. Its final destination would be entered into the computer via voice technologies by the driver.

The car would then communicate with all the other cars as to what was going on and this system would line up all the cars by size and allow them to go down the road together at various speeds. This would allow them to drive very close together and very fast and break the wind resistance to increase efficiency.

Recently the online think tank came up with a basic protocol that could work for net centric cars of the future. We need to be thinking here because the future is rapidly approaching and we need to keep it on all four wheels.

I certainly hope this article is of interest and that is has propelled thought. The goal is simple, to help you in your quest to be the best in 2007. I thank you for reading my many articles on diverse subjects, which interest you.

Dog Agility - 5 Simple Reasons Your Dog Can Run And Jump

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

Dog agility is one of the fast growing sports today. Many dogs and their handlers or partners (thats you) have tried running the agility course and found its more than just training and preparation, its fun fun and fun! Its amazing how your dog reacts to you, they observe you and test you out. If you as a handler or trainer show lots of enthusiasim and have a fun attitude with your dog running over, under, and through the agility equipment, your dog will too. They will never cease to amaze you, their expectations can far exceed your expectation. Incredible, isn’t it!

A simple method of staying in shape is guiding or training your dog through the agility equipment, great exercise for your dog, exercise that is very benefitial for you also. Running and training your dog is the same amount of energy you would put in if working out at a gym or doing an aerobic exercise of some type. The more training and running with your dog, the better shape for both of you. You and your dog will develop more flexibility in your body, stronger heart, and yes lose weight and gain some muscles.

It is vitally important to be patient with your dog when starting on the agility equipment. Your dog might hesitate at first, but once you develop a team relationship and know each other better, your dog will trust you and gladly perfom for you. The key to a successful relationship with your dog is understand its strength and weakness, its abilities and limitations. For instance, a border collie may weave blasting through the poles without working up a sweat whereas your dog might just walk timidly through the poles. Every dog breed is built differently, so there are some limitations. If your dog performs up to the best of its ability and you both have a healthy relationship, then, there you go, you both are winners! Focus on your dog’s abilities, not whether your dog is better, faster, and smarter than others, its more of a relationship that you want to build and cherish for a long time.

Confidence starts with you as a traineer or handler. As stated in a previous paragraph, your dog has great ears and eyes, and observes every movement of your body. A healthy positive confident trainer will have lots of success with their dog, because confidence is contagious and the dog will feel the effect and do likewise. Thats what teamwork is all about, to build each other up. Hence, the more confident you become as a trainer, the more confidence you instill in your dog to run, jump, and fly.

Any type of exercise feeds the mind, body, and soul. No matter how well, how fast, or how smart your dog is, as long as you and your dog run together through the agility equipment, both of you will benefit from the exercise. It takes quick thinking as a handler leading your dog from one obstacle to another without running off course. Timing and working together as a team takes lots of repititions and practice, and yes lots of praise. Excercise with a positive mind feeds the body and soul, enabling both you and your dog to perform well on the course, or just for fun in your own backyard, or a fun club/group activities.

These are five simple reasons why your dog can run and jump the agility equipment. Observe what your dog can or can’t do. Start out with fun games such as a frisbee, tennis ball, or tug toy and find which one your dog likes best, then use them as a reward for performing a task, such as jumping over a bar or going through the weaves successfully.

Monday, February 25th, 2008

Secured loans are also known by another name that is, homeowner loans. If you are in need of finance and you are a homeowner, then secured loan can be the best option for finance. Secured loan enables you to determine the value of your house in times of difficulty.

Secured loan provides the lender a form of security that in case if the borrower makes defaults, still he can recover his money by means of collateral placed. In secured loan the lender allows the borrower to borrow large amount and with comparatively low rate of interest. Usually, the amount which gets approved for the secured loan is less than or equals to equity in the collateral. Usually, in secured loans you can borrow more than ₤25000. This is the reason as to why secured loans are more popular than unsecured loans.

Secured loan, being a most common loan is provided by almost all the lenders. Even, an online lender also provides secured loan as per the need of the borrower. And, it is seen that the online lenders provide secured loan on competitive rate of interest as compared to the lenders in the physical market.

Commonly it is said that the secured loans are risky as they carry risk of repossession. Such risk arises on the occasion of non payment of any monthly instalment. But if the borrower manages secured loan properly and meet all the repayments on time then, they are considered as the best and cheap source of finance.

Needs of every borrower varies, so they uses a secured loan amount as per their need. But most commonly, it is used for either of the purposes such as home improvement, purchasing house, purchasing car, consolidating debts and many more. And, also for each specific purpose a financial market offers different loans such as secured home improvement loans, secured car loan, etc.

Secured loan is best suited to:
